No matter what your skin type is, your skin needs extra love during winter months to protect itself from harsh climatic conditions.

So today in this post, we are going to find out the ways to protect and treat dry and flaky skin.

What Can I Do Treat Dry, Flaky Skin?

Let’s dive into winter skincare tips that really bring a huge difference in your skin.

What Happens If We Don’t Treat Dry Skin?

The winter air removes the natural moisture from the skin leaving our skin scaly and dry. If we don’t treat our dry skin properly, it will further lead to skin conditions like Psoriasis, eczema etc. And also we feel itchy and irritated, right?

So, let’s know, what are the ways to get rid of dry skin in winter.

#1. Choose Right Facial Cleanser

If you are using bar soap on your face, stop it right away. Most commercial soaps available in the market are highly alkaline, which removes much-needed moisture and oil from the skin. Instead, shift to a gentle cleanser.

If you don’t know what a cleanser is, a cleanser is a skincare product that helps to removes dirt, pollutants and makeup residues from your skin but doesn’t completely remove moisture and natural oils from the skin. Some cleansers can balance your skin’s pH so that your skin doesn’t suffer from skin barrier damage (will talk about this later in this post).

During winter’s limit your cleanser usage to only once at night. You can use plain water in the morning to wash your facial skin, as the skin doesn’t get exposed to dirt & makeup products. Wash

I personally use and recommend Cetaphil gentle skin cleanser, which can be used on all skin types. I will make a review on this soon.

#2. Say Yes To Moisturiser

Moisturiser is extremely necessary in order to reduce or protect the skin from trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL). It is nothing but moisture present inside our skin layers.

Since dry skin lacks hydration and moisture choose products with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, glycerine and panthenol.

When it comes to your body go for body butter instead of body lotion. Check for shea butter, cocoa butter and jojoba esters in the ingredients list.

Depending on your skin need, you can moisturise the skin. Don’t think applying moisturiser once in the morning will be sufficient, listen to your skin.

Pro Tip: 

A good moisturiser during the winter and a right sunscreen during summer will contribute a lot to your skin’s appearance.

#3. No Hot Water Please

It is actually better to skip hot water to wash your body and hair for the entire year. I will tell you why?

During winter we feel the hotter the better. But hot water can remove the moisture and natural oils from the skin within a few minutes leading to skin barrier damage.

The skin barrier is our skin’s first line of defence that protects the skin from water loss, UV damage and microorganisms. If it gets damaged you will experience concerns like wrinkled, dry, flaky, red and inflamed skin.

So take a quick 10-minute lukewarm water to protect your skin barrier.

#4. Exfoliation

We know exfoliation can remove dead skin cells and gives us soft and supple skin as soon as we perform exfoliation.

Exfoliation is a wonderful process in the skincare routine when used in the right way. It is generally recommended to exfoliate 2 to 3 times a week depending upon your skin type.

But when it comes to winter, limit your exfoliation routine once and maximum two times a week (once in a week works for me).

Prefer using gentle exfoliating agents. Never use sugar or salt on your face which can damage your skin pores. You can use kitchen ingredients like chickpea flour, oatmeal or finely ground almond flour to exfoliate your face as well as your body. They are really effective in removing dead cells and dirt being very gentle on the skin.

Do pamper your skin with a moisturiser as soon as you finish exfoliation. It makes the skin nourished.

#5. Care Your Feet

I was a person who always neglected my feet until my feet became dry and rough. It happens with many of us and this problem worsens in winter. You can save your feet from dryness by applying a heavy moisturiser or a foot cream.

Do you know your feet needs to be exfoliated more often than other parts of the body? Yes, use a soft-bristled brush every day during the bath to rub your feet gently (Don’t forget to moisturise later).

Once a week soak your feet in warm water with Epsom salt in it. This will relax your feet and removes dead skin effectively. Also, cover your feet with socks but make sure your feet are completely dry before putting on the socks.

#6. Pamper Your Lips

Dry, scaly and pigmented lips can happen anytime but more likely in winter. Apply a generous amount of lip balm every now and then.

Don’t choose lip balms with ingredients like camphor, menthol, eucalyptus. They might feel soothing initially but they actually make your lips dry and flaky.

Pro Tip:

Don’t lick your lips (I know sometimes we can’t resist ourselves). Licking makes your lips dry and pigmented over a period of time.

#7. Give Importance To Night Skincare Routine

All-day long we get ourselves exposed to many things, so it is essential to follow a good night skincare routine. It helps you to remove the excess dust and dirt, also helps your skin in the repair and regeneration process.

Start your night skincare routine with a cleanser, followed by a hydrating toner. Use a serum if you want to address any skin concern or else seal your skin with a moisturiser.

That’s all your skin needs for the day which not even takes 15 minutes of your time. But trust me your skin needs this pampering session every night.

#8. Don’t Miss Your Sunscreen

Yes, you should wear your sunscreen every day, you don’t need to think about the climatic conditions. Don’t think of the external temperature, UV ray can even pass from the clouds and reach your skin.

Unprotected skin from the UV rays makes your skin age faster than it tends to be. Choose a sunscreen with at least SPF 15 if you stay indoor and SPF 30-50 if you step out of your house.

#9. Be Specific About Your Food

I can’t end the post without talking about the food we intake. Yes, what you eat will reflect on your skin, no matter what you put on topically.

Eat antioxidant and omega fatty acid-rich foods like carrots, dark leafy vegetables, walnuts, almonds, flax seeds, Indian gooseberry (amla) etc. These foods can help your skin heal itself and helps you age slower.
